Benign Breast Changes (Fibrocystic Changes)

Benign breast changes can be defined as a benign condition that occurs secondary to hormonal stimulation, usually with each menstrual cycle. More than fifty percent of breast concerns occurring in females of reproductive age result from benign breast changes (fibrocystic changes). These changes can lead to an increase in total breast mass from proliferation and edema, as well as increased nodularity. The symptoms can vary from a feeling of fullness to distinct masses, and may be confused with a pathologic process.
